Kawai Mizuki
Kawai-san, who is from Aichi Prefecture, is currently creating pottery in Kyoto.
She has loved making things since she was a child. When considering university, she recalled making mud pies enthusiastically in sandboxes in her childhood and boldly chose the crafts course at Nagoya University of Arts.
After studying pottery at university, she worked for four years at a studio in Tamba Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture.
In 2022, she became independent in Kyoto and officially started her own pottery activities.
Her works feature exquisitely formed shapes that belie their creation on a potter's wheel, captivating with their feminine, soft colors and beautiful gradations.
Kawai-san originally preferred matte glazes and had created many pieces with them.
"One day, I was captivated by the subtly different expressions created within a single glaze due to firing and other conditions, and I wanted to express them."
Her current style, born from this desire, offers a myriad of expressions through the shading and bleeding of glazes, allowing for the enjoyment of nuanced depth.
Another charm is the lightness of her pieces, made from semi-porcelain.
They are easy to hold, blend into daily life, and add a gentle touch of color to the dining table.
