      The beauty that nature creates

Mai Tagawa's single-flower vase, featuring the beautiful scarlet hue unique to Shigaraki clay.

Scarlet refers to the reddish-brown coloring created when the iron contained in the clay oxidizes during firing. The expression varies slightly depending on the kiln's flames and firing conditions, making each piece entirely one-of-a-kind.

The tiered surface evokes a wheat field swaying in the breeze, illuminated by the setting sun.
The rustic texture of Shigaraki clay harmonizes with Mr. Tagawa's soft and flowing forms, creating a quiet presence.

Even a single wild flower arranged in it creates a beautiful picture, and by displaying seasonal grasses, flowers, or branches, it brings the changing scenery into your daily life.

Place it gently by a window or nestle it on your dining table.
Even just displaying it on your favorite shelf will bring a gentle splash of color to your space.

It may be understated, but it will soothe your heart whenever you catch a glimpse of it.
A harmonious blend of nature's raw beauty and an artisan's sensibility, designed to be a timeless companion in your daily life.

Mai Tagawa is a ceramic artist working in Kanagawa Prefecture.

From a young age, she loved drawing, and art was her favorite subject. Seeing the Shigaraki (Shiga prefecture) ware mugs and saucers her parents cherished, she was drawn to the beautiful scarlet gradation that appeared on the pottery and began to think, "Someday I want to make pieces like this myself." With that desire in her heart, she studied ceramics at Tama Art University.

After graduating, she became independent and initially focused on creating pieces that made use of the scarlet expressions created by the reactions of glaze and clay. In recent years, she has also actively engaged in carbonization firing, exploring the possibilities of rich colors shown by the clay itself.

"I wanted to see the range of color gradations that clay could produce, so I started creating pieces using carbonization firing. I can never predict the finished color, so opening the kiln is always exciting," she says.

Her words reveal her pursuit of the accidental beauty created by nature in her work.

The artists she respects are Lucie Rie, known for her delicate and refined forms, and Shunsai Takahashi, the creator of the Shigaraki ware mugs her parents cherished. Tagawa's admiration for Lucie Rie's neat forms and Shunsai Takahashi's powerful yet warm style is also reflected in Tagawa's delicate forms and her beautiful works featuring scarlet gradations woven by nature.

The delicate forms and the unique colors born in the kiln. The harmony of these two elements in Tagawa's bowls and vases deepens their expression with use, adding a quiet touch of color to daily life.

"I hope you can enjoy my works for a long time," she says.

Please enjoy each piece with Tagawa's heartfelt wish.
